discrimination

The act of drawing perceptual, notational or spacial distinctions (within a work of art).

differentiation

act of selecting and comparing distinct forms (within a work of art), to couple them so as to arrive at information (reference surplus) over and beyond what any individual selected forms have to offer on their own. For example, the difference of "sky" (form) and "ridge" (form) creates the "horizon". The horizon does exist by itself, but as the observed difference of at least a sky and a ridge (see: art meaning ).
